Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) is a Public Sector Undertaking engaged in mining of coal and allied activities. It occupies an important place in as much as it produces bulk of the coking coal mined in the country. BCCL meets almost 50% of the total prime coking coal requirement of the integrated steel sector. BCCL was incorporated in January, 1972 to operate coking coal mines (214 Nos) operating in the Jharia & Raniganj Coalfields, taken over by the Govt. of India on 16th Oct,1971 to ensure planned development of the scarce coking coal resources in the country. Currently, the Company operates 81 coal mines which include 40 underground, 18 opencast & 23 mixed mines as on 01.04.2010. The Company also runs 6 coking coal washeries, 2 non-coking coal washeries. The mines are grouped into 13 areas for administrative convenience.

Jharkhand is located in the eastern part of country. It is divided from the southern part of Bihar in 2000. It is covering the area of 79,710 square kilometers of the country. Total population of Jharkhand is 3.3 crores, out of which 1,69,30,315 are male and 1,60,57,819 are females, sex ratio of the state counts to 948 and literacy rate is 66.41% as per census 2011. Ranchi is the capital city of the state. Jharkhand produce 40 percent of the mineral resource of the country. State is rich in minerals, its gross state domestic product is estimated at $21.7 in the year 2011. Its major cities Jamshedpur, Bokaro and Dhanbad gives high per capita income to the state. The state have largest open cast mines in Asia, largest fertilizer factory of India and also have first Iron &steel and biggest explosives factory. Jharkhand has the source of the Koel, Damodar, Brahmani, Kharkai and Subarnarekha rivers. Jharkhand usually have moderate climate and three well-defined seasons. Jharkhand have three languages the Munda language, the Indo-Aryan language and the Dravidian language. The state have given us gems like Captain of Indian Cricket team Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Bollwood actress Priyanaka Chopra.

Dhanbad is a city in the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is the largest city in Jharkhand. Dhanbad along with its urban areas population ranks 33rd in population amongst other cities in India. Dhanbad is famous for its coal mining and has some of the largest mines in India. Tata Steel, Bharat Coking Coal (BCCL), ECL and IISCO (Indian Iron And Steel Company) are some of the companies having coal mines in the district. The Indian School of Mines is located in Dhanbad. Among the rail divisions of Indian Railway, Dhanbad Rail Division is the second largest in terms of revenue generation after the Mumbai division.
