Zoology is a branch of biology which studies scientific structure and life of animals including reptiles, birds, fish and mammals.  It studies animal kingdom of living and extinct. Problems of destruction of rainforest, study of insects, structure of organisms etc. are being covered in Zoology.

People who specialize in the field of zoology are called Zoologist. They study animal behaviors, species characteristics etc of animals. Generally, people call them animal scientist or biologist as it studies animal kingdom. More interestingly, a zoologist also analyzes how animals interact to each other.  Here are some more roles that a Zoologist perform:

Recognizing, classifying, recording and monitoring animal species
Collecting data and interpreting it
Employing complex procedures, for example, computerized molecular and cellular analysis, and in-vitro fertilization

Studying animals in their natural environment or in captivity

To become a Zoologist one can opt for any one of these following stream:

Taxonomists are mostly concerned with naming and classification of animal species,
Physiologists study the metabolic processes of animals
Embryologists focus on the early stages of animals.
Herpetology is the study of reptiles and amphibians

One can also specialize in one animal group:

Ornithologists deal with birds,
Ichthyologists study fishes
Mammalogists deal with mammals

Qualification Criteria:

In India, many universities and colleges are offering Graduation and Post Graduation degree in Zoology like B.Sc, M.Sc, M.Phil and Ph.D levels. In Bachelor’s level, student may take Zoology as principal subject or with Microbiology / Botany / Chemistry / Physics as Principal Subject and Zoology as subsidiary subject or B.Sc (First Class) of any university in Zoology / Life Sciences / Biological Sciences.
