Education Ministry released performance grading index, these states including Punjab, Tamil Nadu are on top in school education ranking

The states of Chandigarh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Kerala topped the latest edition of the Performance Grading Index (PGI) released by the Education Ministry on Sunday. Let us inform that after the approval of Education Minister Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ by the Union Ministry of Education, the third edition of this Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2019-20 has been released. Under this, grades are given on the basis of initiatives taken by the states and union territories in the field of school education.

The states have been scored on this basis

PGI evaluates performance in school education based on data obtained from Integrated District Information System Plus, National Achievement Survey, Mid-Day Meal, Public Financial Management System and Shagun Portal. All this data is maintained by the Department of School Education. In PGI, states are scored on a total of 1,000 points across 70 parameters including access, infrastructure, equity and learning outcomes.

These states improved the  PGI score by 10 percent

Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Puducherry, Punjab and Tamil Nadu have improved the overall PGI score by 10 percent or 100 or more.

Let us tell that last year the top bracket (or grade 1++) was occupied by Chandigarh, Gujarat and Kerala. In the latest edition, Gujarat has slipped to the second bracket (Grade 1+), which is occupied by Haryana, Maharashtra, Delhi, Rajasthan, Puducherry and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

13 states and union territories showed 10 improvement in infrastructure

The education ministry said 13 states and union territories showed an improvement of 10 per cent or more in ‘infrastructure and facilities’, while Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Odisha improved their scores by 20 per cent or more. On the other hand, in ‘equity’, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Odisha have shown improvement of more than 10 per cent. In the ‘Governance Process’, 19 states have shown an improvement of 10 percent or more.

PGI was first released in 2019

Significantly, PGI was started under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring unprecedented change in school education. In this, grades are given to the states and union territories under a set of 70 parameters. For the first time this index was released in 2019 taking into account the initiatives taken by the states and union territories in 2017-18.
