Mizoram is a mountainous region in North east India which became the 23rd State of Union Territory in February 1987, with Aizawl as its capital. The name is derived from Mi (people), Zo (Belonging to the people of Mizoram/Lushai Hills) and Ram (land), and thus Mizoram implies “land of the hill people”. In the northeast, it is the southernmost landlocked state sharing borders with three of the seven sister states, namely Tripura, Assam, Manipur. The state also shares a 722 kilometre border with the neighbouring countries of Bangladesh and Myanmar. Mizoram has a highly literate work force, with literacy rate of nearly 90% and widespread use of English. About 60% of the people of Mizoram are engaged in agriculture and allied activities. The main pattern of agriculture followed is jhum or shifting cultivation. About 63% of the total crop area is under Jhum cultivation. To replace the destructive and unproductive jhum cultivation with sustainable means of occupation, State Govt has launched an innovative programme called new Land Use Policy cover all the districts of Mizoram, the jhum farming practices are steadily being replaced with a significant horticulture and bamboo products industry. The biggest contributors to state’s GSDP growth are Agriculture, Public Administration and Construction work. Mizoram has two industrial estates at Zuagtui and Kolasib and a Software Technology Park in Mizoram University campus. The state government has acquired 127 acres of land in Khawnuam for development of the Indo-Myanmar border trade township.
