Considered the first prominent female Punjabi writer of the 20th century, literature boasts of her laurels as a prolific writer. Best known for her novel, Pinjar, she has more than a hundred novels and several meaningful poems to her credit which manage to cast a spell even to this day.

Even decades ago, she was bold enough to live life on her own terms, which can be spotted in her writings too. Here are some of her best poems that continue to live on.

Some of her poetries are:

Meri sej haafiz hai,

par joote aur kameez ki tarah,

tu apna badan bhi utar de,

udhar mudhe pe rakh de,

koi khaas baat nahi,

bas apne desh ka rivaaz hai.

– Amrita Pritam

Mai chup, shaant aur adhol khadi thi,

sirf paas behte ssamundra mein toofan tha,

fir samundra ko khuda jaane,

kya khayaal aya?

Usne toofan ki ek potli si baandhi,

mere haathon mein thamayi,

aur has kar kuch door ho gya.

– Amrita Pritam

Aaj sooraj ne kuch ghabra kar,

Roshni ki ek khidki kholi,

baadal ki ek khidki band kar di,

ayr andhere ki seedhiyan utar gaya,

itihaas ka mehmaan mere chauke se,

bhooka uth gya.

– Amrita Pritam
