There is improvement in the higher education of the state. The Gross Enrollment Ratio (GIR) of the state in higher education is 5.3% higher than the national average. The number of colleges in the age group of 18 to 23 per lakh population is 26. However, in terms of GIR and number of colleges, the neighboring state lags far behind Punjab and Himachal.

The Ministry of Education has released the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) report for 2019-20. The report of 2018-19 was released last year, in which the GIR was 30.9, which has increased to 32.4 in the report released this time i.e. 2019-2020, i.e. an increase of 1.5 percent. The ratio of students is 31.7, while that of girl students is 32.2, that is, more girls than boys are moving towards higher education. The overall proportion of SC children in higher education is 20.3. In this the ratio of boys is 17.3 and that of girls is 23.6. The total proportion of Scheduled Tribes is 31.1, with 23.0 boys and 19.2 girls.

There are total 313 colleges in the
state, there are 15 universities in the state. There are 313 colleges including private and government. It has 166 government, 147 private, 21 private aided and 121 unaided private colleges.
